Digital Platform for the European Capital of Culture
Plovdiv 2019 is the official digital platform of the European Capital of Culture. Our studio was responsible for the full concept, design and development of a system capable of presenting hundreds of cultural events, partners and initiatives in a clear, modern and expressive way.
The Plovdiv 2019 Foundation is the official organization behind the city’s candidacy and realization of the European Capital of Culture project. It coordinates, curates and oversees the full cultural program and its international communication.
Designing a Modular Digital System for a Large‑Scale Cultural Project
The Plovdiv 2019 platform was one of the most demanding projects we’ve taken on. The website served as the primary communication tool of the Plovdiv 2019 Foundation — the main organizer and coordinator of the European Capital of Culture initiative. The challenge came not only from the scale of the content, but also from the extremely compressed production window of less than 45 working days. We had to create a refined, flexible and visually coherent system capable of presenting the full cultural program to a wide international audience.
We approached the project by restructuring the entire content into independent modules, grouped by type and function. Instead of a traditional hierarchical tree, we built a flat, interlinked architecture that allowed direct connections between related elements. The visual language was shaped around the official Plovdiv 2019 identity by Studio Punkt and the Uni Neue typeface by Fontfabric. The modular logic of the content became the foundation of the interface: clean grids, generous spacing, precise typography and a set of visual components that adapt to the purpose of each page. The result is a system that feels both artistic and functional — a digital canvas for one of the most significant cultural events in Bulgaria’s contemporary history.
Impact, Results and Digital Contribution to Plovdiv 2019
The platform became a central tool for the Foundation’s communication, supporting the full cultural program throughout the year. It provided clarity, structure and visibility for hundreds of events and partners, and was recognized with the 1st place award at BGWEB – Website of the Year. The project demonstrated how a well‑designed digital system can elevate a cultural initiative of this scale. By combining modular architecture, strong visual identity and precise execution, we created a platform that not only informed, but also reflected the artistic spirit of Plovdiv 2019.
