Open Art Files – digital platform for Bulgarian contemporary art

Open Art Files is a long‑term initiative dedicated to documenting, organizing and presenting Bulgarian contemporary art. The platform is part of the official program of Plovdiv – European Capital of Culture 2019.

Building a Structured Digital Archive for Contemporary Art

The project required a platform capable of gathering fragmented information from the Bulgarian contemporary art scene and presenting it in a coherent, navigable form. Artists, curators, galleries, organizations, documents and critical texts had to coexist in a single system — flexible, expandable and easy to maintain. The platform also needed a dedicated panel for invited authors to upload materials and resources.

Flat information architecture

We developed a flat information architecture that avoids unnecessary hierarchy and allows direct connections between people, places and documents. Each resource type received its own descriptive structure, enabling precise categorization and cross‑referencing. On the visual side, the interface had to remain neutral yet expressive — a disciplined layout that adapts to the content of each page. We created a responsive grid system that works equally well on desktop and mobile, ensuring clarity even when the archive grows.

A Sustainable Framework for Cultural Knowledge

Open Art Files demonstrates how a carefully designed digital system can support cultural memory. By combining modular architecture with a focused visual language, the platform provides a long‑term foundation for documenting and understanding contemporary art in Bulgaria.
