A Digital Space for One of Bulgaria’s Most Distinct Photographic Voices

Working for an artist like Maria Djelebova means building a frame that almost disappears. Her photographs demand silence, clarity and precision. Our task was to create a digital environment that carries her work without competing with it — a space that feels like turning pages, not browsing a website.

Designing a Minimal System for a Highly Articulated Body of Work

Evolution

This is the second website we create for Maria — the first was in 2006. The new platform had to reflect her evolution, her sharper visual language and the complexity of her long-term projects. We explored many directions before finding the balance: restrained interactions, soft transitions, asynchronous loading and a structure that feels like rediscovery rather than navigation.

Typography and Composition as an Extension of the Image

Cormorant Infant

The typeface had to be present yet invisible, characteristic yet quiet. After long testing, we chose Cormorant Infant — classic, sharp and elegant, with excellent Bulgarian Cyrillic. The layout follows the rhythm of her work: generous spacing, slow breathing, and compositions that let the eye rest before entering the next image.

A Digital Experience Built Around Stillness and Detail

Solution

We created a system where every interaction is deliberate and every transition is subtle. The interface behaves like a physical sequence — unfolding, revealing, pausing. No decorative effects, no noise. Only the photographs, their internal tension, and the space around them. The result is a digital portfolio that respects the nature of Maria’s work — precise, intimate and uncompromising. A site that does not interpret her images, but simply gives them room to exist.
